Russell

Since the early eighteen hundreds Russell has provided safe anchorage, fresh food, and water to travelers.

In 1840 Russell was made the first capital of New Zealand.

The historic Pompallier house is two doors down from Beachside.  The rammed earth Catholic Mission building houses the 1840's working bookbinding, printery and tannery.

Beachside is wonderful location from which to watch the sun set.
